Best Time to Visit Egypt: A Month-by-Month Guide for American Travelers

By Heaven Tours | Travel Experts Since 2000

Egypt is one of the most extraordinary destinations on earth — but timing your visit makes all the difference. After over 20 years of bringing American travelers to the land of the Pharaohs, our team at Heaven Tours knows exactly when to go, what to expect each season, and how to make the most of every month. Here is our complete guide.

The Short Answer

The best time to visit Egypt is October through April. Temperatures are comfortable, the skies are clear, and the ancient sites are at their most enjoyable. If you are planning to visit the Pyramids of Giza, cruise the Nile through Luxor and Aswan, or explore the temples of Karnak and Philae — this is your window.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

October — Perfect Conditions Begin

October marks the start of Egypt’s golden travel season. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 75–85°F in Cairo and around 80°F in Luxor. The summer crowds have thinned, making it an ideal time to explore the Valley of the Kings and the Grand Egyptian Museum without feeling rushed. This is one of our most popular departure months.

November — Peak Season Starts

November is arguably the single best month to visit Egypt. Daytime temperatures hover around 70–75°F in Cairo and Luxor, dropping pleasantly cool at night. The Nile cruise experience is at its finest — sailing from Luxor to Aswan with warm days and starlit evenings on deck. Heaven Tours’ Egypt programs departing in November fill up quickly — we recommend booking at least 3 months in advance.

December — Festive and Magical

Christmas in Egypt is a truly special experience. Our Egypt Christmas Tour packages combine Cairo, Alexandria, Nile cruise, and the Red Sea — perfect for families wanting a meaningful and adventurous holiday. Temperatures in Cairo are mild at around 65°F. Luxor and Aswan are slightly warmer. December is also when the Christian communities of Egypt celebrate Coptic traditions that date back nearly 2,000 years.

January — Cool, Quiet, and Wonderful

January is one of the quietest months for tourism in Egypt, which means shorter queues at major sites and a more personal experience. Temperatures in Cairo can dip to 55°F at night but remain pleasant during the day. The Red Sea coast at Hurghada is cooler but still beautiful. For travelers who prefer a quieter, more reflective journey — particularly for our Sacred Echoes Christian heritage tour — January is ideal.

February — Ideal for Nile Cruises

February brings some of Egypt’s most beautiful weather. Daytime temperatures in Luxor and Aswan reach a perfect 75°F with almost zero chance of rain. The ancient temples look stunning in the soft winter light. Our 9-day Discover Egypt and 11-day Most of Egypt programs are especially popular in February for families and first-time visitors.

March — Spring Arrives

March is a transitional month — still very pleasant, especially for the Nile Valley. Cairo temperatures climb toward 80°F by late March. One thing to be aware of: the Khamsin winds can occasionally blow fine sand through parts of Egypt in late March and April. This is rare but worth knowing. Overall, March remains an excellent travel month.

April — Last of the Ideal Season

April offers warm, sunny days before summer heat builds. It is one of the best months for the Red Sea — water temperatures are perfect for snorkeling and diving in Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. Easter in Egypt is a deeply moving experience — our special Easter packages combine Cairo, Alexandria, and the Red Sea for families celebrating the holiday in a historic setting.

May to September — Summer in Egypt

Summer in Egypt is hot. Very hot. Cairo can reach 100°F or above, and Luxor and Aswan are even hotter. However, there are reasons some travelers choose this period:

  • Fewer crowds at major sites
  • Lower prices on hotels and some packages
  • The Red Sea coast remains popular — the sea breeze makes Hurghada and Sharm bearable
  • Ramadan travel — if your visit coincides with Ramadan, the atmosphere in Cairo and Luxor at night is extraordinary, with streets alive with lights, food, and prayer

Our advice: if you must travel in summer, focus on the Mediterranean coast (Alexandria), the Red Sea, or plan activities for early morning and evening when temperatures are lower.

Special Considerations for American Travelers

Flight time: Direct and connecting flights from the US to Cairo typically take 13–16 hours depending on your departure city. Heaven Tours organizes departures from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, and other major US cities.

Visa: Most American passport holders can obtain an Egypt e-visa online before departure (currently $25 per person). We assist all our travelers with the visa process.

Ramadan: If your travel dates fall during Ramadan, be aware that some restaurants may be closed during the day and alcohol is less available. The evenings, however, are vibrant and festive. Many of our Muslim travelers specifically choose Ramadan for its spiritual atmosphere.

Currency: Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP). US dollars are widely accepted at tourist sites and hotels.
