Hajj vs Umrah: What’s the Difference and How to Prepare

By Heaven Tours | Islamic Travel Specialists Since 2000

For many Muslims in America, the journey to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah is one of the most important decisions of their lives. But there is often confusion about the difference between Hajj and Umrah — what each one involves, when you can go, and how to prepare. At Heaven Tours, we have been guiding American Muslims through both pilgrimages for over 20 years. Here is our complete guide.

What Is Umrah?

Umrah is often called the “lesser pilgrimage.” It is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year. While it is not obligatory, it carries immense spiritual reward and is deeply beloved by Muslims around the world.

Umrah consists of four main rituals:

  1. Ihram — entering the sacred state of purity, wearing the white garments (for men) and modest clothing (for women)
  2. Tawaf — circling the Kaaba seven times in Masjid al-Haram in Makkah
  3. Sa’i — walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa
  4. Halq or Taqsir — shaving or trimming the hair to exit the state of Ihram

Umrah can be completed in a few hours, though most travelers spend several days in Makkah to pray, reflect, and repeat the Tawaf as many times as they wish.

What Is Hajj?

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam — one of the most sacred obligations in the faith. Every Muslim who is physically and financially able is required to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime.

Unlike Umrah, Hajj can only be performed during specific days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah — the last month of the Islamic calendar. The rituals of Hajj are more extensive and include:

  1. Ihram — entering the sacred state at the Miqat
  2. Tawaf al-Qudum — the arrival Tawaf
  3. Standing at Arafat (Wuquf) — the most essential pillar of Hajj, performed on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah
  4. Muzdalifah — spending the night and collecting pebbles
  5. Rami al-Jamarat — stoning the pillars at Mina
  6. Qurbani — the sacrifice
  7. Halq or Taqsir — shaving or trimming the hair
  8. Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i
  9. Tawaf al-Wada — the farewell Tawaf

Hajj takes approximately 5 days of rituals, though most pilgrims spend 10–14 days in Saudi Arabia including their time in Makkah and Madinah.

Key Differences at a Glance

Duration A few hours to a few days 5 ritual days (10–14 days total)

Arafat Not required Required — the most essential pillar
Difficulty Moderate More physically demanding
Waiting list Not required Required in many countries

Can I Perform Both?

Yes — and many pilgrims do! There are actually three ways to combine Hajj and Umrah:

  • Tamattu — perform Umrah first during the Hajj season, exit Ihram, then re-enter Ihram for Hajj. This is the most common method for travelers coming from outside Saudi Arabia.
  • Qiran — perform both Umrah and Hajj with a single Ihram without exiting between them.
  • Ifrad — perform Hajj only.

Heaven Tours can advise you on which method is best suited to your circumstances and the time you have available.

Umrah During Ramadan

One of the most spiritually powerful times to perform Umrah is during the holy month of Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have said that Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent in reward to performing Hajj. Breaking your fast (iftar) near the Kaaba, praying Taraweeh in Masjid al-Haram, and spending the nights of the last ten days in the holiest place on earth — this is an experience that transforms lives.

Our Ramadan Umrah packages include prime hotels near the Haram, suhoor and iftar arrangements, and full logistical support so you can focus entirely on worship.
